Commercial floatation centres have existed in the United States since the end of the 1970ies and their number has constantly increased in urban centres on both west and east coasts. Floatation technology was, however, unable to reach the broader mass market, as, for example fitness studios have and for a long time it formed part of an esoteric subculture. Floating tanks came from the States first to Great Britain, Australia and the Netherlands roughly in the mid 1980ies. Since the end of the 1990ies, new commercial centres have opened in all European countries and in Asia. Floating is frequently used in hotels and is increasingly featured in the media.
In 2019, there are floatation centres in nearly every larger town in Germany and new centres are opening up everywhere. The number of floatation centres worldwide is also growing. There are also more and more manufacturers of floatation equipment. On the international market, most manufacturers are established in Europe.
